Software Engineering Institute Wants to Help You

Reprinted from the BMP Surveyor Spring 1993 Issue, Produced by the US Navy Best Manufacturing Practices Program

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) provides leadership in software engineering to improve the quality of systems that depend on software. It is sponsored by DoD, managed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency, administered by the Air Force's Electronic Systems Center, and is located at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

SEI seeks to understand, model, and assess the software practices required to define, develop, and maintain complex systems. While the institute emphasizes applications to defense systems, the products and services it offers can help any user of software to make lasting improvements in their software engineering practices. The SEI approach is to define the software process; to support the process with engineering methods and automated tools; and to educate and train people to design, select, and use the most beneficial processes, methods, and tools. The goal is better software and greater productivity.

The institute offers expertise in the areas of: software process risk management, engineering methods, tools, and engineering education; real-time distributed systems; Ada; and computer emergency response teams.

SEI offers courses, publications, videotapes, software, model curricula and materials, and workshops and conferences. Specific information on the institute and its products can be obtained from: Customer Relations, Software Engineering Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3890, Telephone: (412) 268-5800.
