Subject: PRISM Acceptance
Now that PRISM has been in use for a few years, has there been any published acceptance of it by the Department of Defense as an alternative to MIL-HDBK-217? I am working in the nuclear power industry and frequently see the handbook specified as the accepted way to predict failure rates. I would like to have credible evidence that PRISM is accepted as an alternative approache.

Current guidance resulting from Acquisition Reform does not authorize DoD program offices to specify the use of military or commercial standards for new programs and/or system procurements without a waiver. Instead program offices recommend that methods (either commercial or military) be used that reflect the most current and accurate data and information. PRISM was created and released by the DoDís Reliability Analysis Center (RAC) in March of 2000 and contains a prediction methodology that is based on current data and information for components and systems. PRISM also will continue to be updated and supported by the DoDís RAC. Other methodologies such as MIL-HDBK-217 have not been updated or supported by the DoD since 1995.
