Subject: About reliability test
I have some problems with reliability tests on complex system like mobile equipments or air crafts and such things.
Normally, We can't afford to test for all the missions, because of test cost and time, etc,. I wonder it's silly question, How do you do the test for above such things ? Do you usually test the parts and components first, and end item eventually ? Otherwise only for end item ? In case the test results can't meet the specification, Did you normally have enough budget for the test and engineering change ?

Subject: Field Data
I am analysing field data from a piece of electro pneumatic equipment. The dat however refers to aircraft flying hours and not necessarily equipment operating hours. When a piece of equipment is returned for repair we record equipment operating data, however there are in excess of 1000 systems in service and we have only had 240 failure in 9 years.
The problem is because the operational time of the population is not known it is not easy to determine the true reliability of the system and the equipments reliability is a contractual requirement. Does anyone have any thoughts on the best approach to take with the customer or any tips on analysing this type of data? We are trying to work with the customer to determine the average equipment operating rate during a known period of flying but as yet this is not known.

Subject: Deferred Repair and Availability
Recently I read a paper on the effects of deferred repair on availability. I was surprised to find that the results were worse for steady-state vs. 5 year interval. Is it not counter-intuitive? The authors argue that trasient solution of avaialbility models over shorter time horizon are more desirable. I would appreciate if someone can provide me their opinion on it.

Subject: Fan Failure Rate
I am looking for fan failure rate data. It has always been my general observation that fans really don't fail, their bearings just get worn and they start making a lot of noise. If you have any insight on the nature of fan reliability prediction, I would be very interested.
