Can anyone tell me of any good reference material on how to design and calculate availability (esp for a computer server)? Thank you.

A detailed source of information on system design for computers is contained in a book that was written by Daniel Siewiorek and Robert Swarz. This book is: The Theory and Practice Of Reliable System Design, published by Digital Press in 1982. For general availabilty information, I would suggest reviewing sections 5.7,7.7 and 10.7 in MIL-HDBK-338, Electronic Relaibility Design Handbook, 1998.
