Subject: Annual Field return
Message:
There are so many methods out there to calculate the Annual Field Return and also Annualized field return. What is the standard method use by the OEM computer industry? If I have the field return for a few months, is there a way to predict future returns?

Companies that we have communicated with seem to express the rate of return of units in terms of percent per thousand item per calendar year. So a one percent per thousand return would be equavalent to 10 failures per year. The data that you have collected (three months) could be used to represent the future potential if the unit is a mature item. I would suggest that if a reliability estimate has been performed or prior data has been collected on the unit, then a Bayesian combination process could be performed to determine the projected reliability.
