Subject: Mechanical Wear-in
I have a fractional horsepower actuator motor gear and am looking for resources on how to determine acceptance test levels and ESS type (wear-in) test(s) on the actuator. Guidance on applicable Mil Handbooks, books, etc would be most helpful.

Working with the assumption that the actuator you are referencing is a electrical solenoid assembly rather than a hydraulic or pneumatic actuator, the primary causes of failure are shorting of the windings, opening of the coil usually due to overheating and binding or sticking of the armature. These failure conditions can be accelerated by performing high and low temperature testing, over current tests and sand and dust test. References that could be considered in developing a test sequence are: NSWC-98/LE1 "Handbook of Reliability Prediction Procedures for Mechanical Equipment", MIL-STD 810F "Test methods for Environmental Engineering Considerations and Laboratory Tests", MIL-HDBK-344, "Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) of Electronic Equipment, TRI-Service Environmental Stress Screening Guidelines and Non-electronic Part Reliability Data (NPRD-95)
