CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial bus system developed by Robert Bosch and is suited for networking “intelligent” devices such as sensors and actuators within a system or subsystem. A transmitter sends a message to all CAN nodes called broadcasting. Each node decides on the basis of the identifier received whether it should process the message or not. The identifier also determines the priority that the message enjoys in competition for bus access. Today there are more than 50 CAN protocol controller chips from more than 15 manufacturers. In the Reliability Analysis Center report “Failure Mode/Mechanism Distributions (FMD)”, controller chips have failure modes of following distribution: Shorted 35% Parametric failure 28% Opened 21% Functional Failure 11% Bond Failure 3% No Defect 2%
