Hello there, I am looking for failure rate information for active matrix LCD panels, and also for cold cathode backlights (Airborne Inhabited Fighter envrionment if possible, but not necessary). If anybody can suggest a suitable data source (or better still email me a failure rate) I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Richard.

Information on LCD displays appears to be difficult to obtain. The panel displays in the F-22 Advanced Tactical Fighter were the first multifunction LCDs used in a military cockpit. The expected MTBF is 10,000 to 20,000 hours depending on what failures you want to discount, such as maintenance errors, operator errors and cannot duplicate. I could not find any information on cold cathode back lighted displays

After searching the web, I found reliability data on both the Hot and Cold Cathode elements that you requested. For the hot cathode product, the mean-time-between- failure (MTBF) is about 10,000 to 30,000 hours. These MTBFs are found in Allbite Technologies Inc. product data and Solener Company data on DC electronic Ballasts. The Cold Cathode data shows MTBFs from 3,800 to 50,000 hours depending on temperature. The lower the temperature the lower the MTBF. Computer Dynamics has a temperature and backlighting graph on their product page that shows the relationship. This graph is based on test data by the company. Another source of information is located in the Honeywell multipurpose color display page. This display is used in the Longbow Apache helicopter and the cold cathode has a reliability of 9,900 hours.
