Subject: MTBF's
Message:
I have the MTBF of a single component. How would I calculate the total MTBF for 2 of these components if it is a 1 out of 2 standby redundancy. Thanks in advance

The RAC web site has a complete posting of redundancy equations posted at http://rac.alionscience.com/rac/jsp/toolbox/ractoolbox.jsp. Tables will give you a reliability estimate that is time dependent. MTBF can be solved from R(t)=e^-(t/MTBF) and will be valid for the time period of interest which should be consistent with time used in reliability estimation equation.

I would use Markov chains to calculate 2 equal failure rate components, one in stand-by repairable configuration with perfect sensing and switching reliability.
