Subject: Value of Reliability Engineering Tasks
Hi Could anyone help me with some information on published papers on the value of reliability engineering tasks within product development or a good source of data on this subject. The type of information is what tasks should be used and what value has it been shown to give to the project. I think RAC conducted a study by I can't find the paper. Best Regards Terry

Several references come into mind when considering reliability tasks. The information is not as clear cut as you seem to indicate, that is, the reports only indicate what tasks should be considered for a given type of program, not the value added or subtracted. The costs, program impacts and return on investment are a different consideration then "best" tools for improving or maintaining reliability of a product. The reports that I would recommend are: RAC Blueprint for Product Reliability, Defining the Program RAC Benchmarking Commercial Reliability Practices Reliability Program Planning In a Commercial Environment, J.A.Hough, 2001 AR&MS Introduction to Reliability Theory and Practice, J.B.Bowles 2001 AR&MS In these reports, tasks and timing of tasks for reliability are discussed and rankings are indicated. It is up to you to determine which tasks are necessary based on the product, the application environment and operating considerations. Value of the task is also a determination that you will have to assess.
