Actual reliability data on fiberoptic cables is difficult to obtain, however, information has been published that details their failure mechanisms. Generally, fiberoptic cables will fail either as a result of mechanical stresses or the degradation of optical properties. Mechanical integrity of fiberoptic cable is associated with the flaw distribution and the amount of stress that is imposed on the fiber. Stresses from bending appear to have more impact than stretching related stresses. Optical properties are also affected by the amount that a fiberoptic cable is bent. Parameters such as insertion loss, reflectance and polarization dependant loss are some parameters that can be affected. One paper that goes into some detail on optical cable reliability is: “Advancements in Mechanical Strength and Reliability of Optical Fibers, G. Scott Glaesemann, Corning Incorporated, Corning, NY 14831”. This paper was published by the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, Box 10, Bellingham, WA 98277 relating to a conference that was held in Boston, MA on 20-21 September, 1999.
