Message: That probably will not help much but we in our family got a 1983 PC (386) and an even older Mac. In the last 6 yrs both were used only intermittenly spending most of the time stored in boxes either in a house or in a shed but protected from dust.
They both still power on and work when we try although the PC had a Y2K glitch.
Can you treat this as field data with a sample of 2?
I can't see why laptops would behave differently from desktops.

Message: Over the past few years, the most common problem I have had with older unused computers is the cmos memory battery failing.
