Reliability prediction is an important technique in reliability engineerig. But now, many people have doubts on its value. Because the prediction results are often quite different from the actual performance. Is reliability prediction useless?

I think that reliability prediction have their utility. But you have not to hope to calculate the EXACT value. It give only indication about the figure to compare to target achievment. In fact reliability prediction are very useful if you can compare them to operational figures. If you want to estimate spares or preventive maintenance planning, you must take operational figures. I know some guys which correct reliability handbook data with factors issued from their operational experience, it takes times but the result have a good confidence level.
