Subject: The value of reliability prediction
Message:
Reliability prediction is an important technique in reliability engineerig. But now, many people have doubts on its value. Because the prediction results are often quite different from the actual performance. Is reliability prediction useless?

The creation of a reliability prediction serves many purposes. It is used to ensure that electronic and mechanical stress analyses are performed to eliminate overstressed or marginal design performance. The prediction can also be used to estimate product reliability performance and should be used to support trade studies on different design approaches. Additionally, the prediction can be used to ensure all life items meet expected life. Another benefit of a prediction is that it allows reliability to be allocated to lower level specifications and establishes a requirements baseline for all component procurement, e.g. lot acceptance tests.
