Subject: reliability modelling for comms network (star topology configuration)

Hi, Recently, I faced one problem on the reliability modelling for the communcation network (for star topology configuration). The sinario is: 1. The network consists of 1 centre site + 4 remote sites A,B,C&D. 2. The configuration on all remoted sites are same. 3. Any remoted site failure doesn't affect the operation of other r-sites and centre. The question is - the system availability of this network shall consider : a. all sites (ie. 1+4), or b. 1 centre + 1 remote site. (ie.1+1) c. 1 centre + 2 remote sites in nCr (4C2) (ie. 1+2) d. others, pls advise. Thank you. Teng YL

What is the reliabilty of a star configuration comm. network with a central unit? The answer is: it depends, primarily on what the customer wants. So, compute the probability of all sites working, all but one working, all but two,..., all sites failed (either site failure or central unit failure) as a function of age of system. The load on your network may be random. The definition of successful function may be capacity > load and reliability is P[Capacity > Load|Age], where capacity and load are random.
