Is there any available data on open type failure modes for the transient voltage suppressors (e.g. SMBJ33A)? FMD-97 lists only shorted, failed BVR and loose particle. Also, one manufacturer rep indicated that shorted and degraded types are the most common, with no info on other types of failures. Thanks!

There is a good article on Failure Modes and Fusing of TVS Devices by David W.Hutchins. That should answer your question. It is also a good design practice check based on stress/derating if the conditions the device is subjected to is within designed limits.
