Message: I concur with Bob Valerius' recommendation, so I linked a free, open-source MIL-HDBK-217F Excel workbook to http://www.fieldreliability.com/MH217F1.htm. It's not competitive with commercial software, because its library is incomplete, its includes only the parts count method, and some MIL-HDBK-217 fudge factors have been implemented.
I recommend "Credible Reliability Prediction" if you want to predict reliability, P[Life > t], not just MTBF, for interesting t values such as: 0, warranty, inspection and PM times, and useful life. It's available from http://www.asq-rd.org/publications.htm.
