We are in the process of revamping our warranty and returns databases. In the process of this we asked the simple question of what can we use this data for.

We were thinking using it to update a reliability prediction model (parts count), but there are probably better ways. What can this data tell us and how do you effectively utilize it.

Hi Chris, Apart from developing models here are few more usage of warranty databases. 1) Understand weak links of existing designs. This would help to decide overall design related processes, architecture level pros and cons of current products. 2) This data can even be useful to draw maintence policies of the company for certain products. For example if for certain products as of now company is giving 1 yr. warranty and data shows/prooves that same products are working succefully for two years then it would be good inputs for sales and marketing. Same applies otherway around where currently warranty is higher then field performance then better to revisit warranty policies. 3 ) Warranty data can also be useful to offer Annual Maintence Contact( AMC ) to end customers. I read in some article that few MNCs like Dell recover there warranty claim compensation from benefit of AMC and AMC business itself is profit making entity for them. So warranty trend is key to this business opportunity. 4) Data can also be useful to understand either problems are induce due to design issues , manufacturing issues or human factors/customer misuse of the product. If last one is the case then urgent attention may be required on the product user interface and customer understanding. In nutshell warranty data is golden mine but gold need to be extracted from it.
