Subject: Battery Reliability
I am trying to find information on how to calculate the failure rate for batteries (re-chargeable and non-rechargeable) so that I can include them in a system Reliablity & Availability Analysis. Can anyone supply me with the equations and/or the source (refence material) for determining battery failure rates? Thanks for your help.

There are no simple equations to calculate the reliability of batteries. To include them in a system availability analysis would require a system simulation taking into account the following factors (as a minimum): (1) how often the battery is recharged, (2) battery discharge characteristics, (3) for non-rechargeable batteries: the average life for the given load, (4) preventive maintenance monitoring characteristics and frequency (5) definition of failure (e.g., voltage threshold) (6) battery loads. Individual battery life and reliability is also a function of battery chemistry and construction characteristics. All these assumptions must be defined for a meaningful availability analysis.
